Return of THE JEDI

So... a little something that I thought about when I decided I'd watch Return of the Jedi again.

Does 'the Jedi' imply one Jedi, like Anakin Skywalker? But then again, we saw three Jedi on the edge of the Endor forest at the end of ROTJ, which could be taken to mean 'the Order'. It's not Luke, we know that, because he's becoming a Jedi, not returning. The entire saga (Episodes I through VI) are basically centred on Luke, but we do know that the Order falls in the Jedi Purges after Anakin turns to the Dark side.

I'm not sure where to turn on this, so I thought you guys might be able to say a little about it. Ideas? Comment them below!

  1. I would say that "Return of the Jedi" refers to the Jedi Order in general. I mean, at the end of the third movie we see the Jedi Council, Order, and basically everyone but Yoda and Obi-Wan destroyed, leaving the galaxy to the rein of the Empire/Dark Side. Therefore, one can say that the Jedi have lost and vanished, which...for 18 years, they do!

And in A New Hope we see Obi-Wan defeated, leaving only Yoda...who then trains Luke. Now, as Yoda dies in the Sixth movie, he says that Luke is the only one left, although he is not a Jedi Yet...he must confront Vader (his father) first. So for a little while in the middle of "Jedi" there are no Jedi at all, as he has yet to confront his father.

So when Luke finally does become a Jedi after confronting his father on the death star, in that moment right before the Emperor almost kills him with force lightning, we see the Jedi returned...and then almost killed. But since Luke does survive, as an official Jedi Knight, who then goes on (As far as we can see) to restore the jedi order, it means that the Jedi have returned...after 27 years, yes...but they have returned.

Along with this, you could see that it refers to Anakin's return from the Dark Side...although I'd say that this isn't the case as much since the original title for the movie was actually "Revenge of the Jedi" but was scrapped because Jedi don't get Revenge (it was later used in Revenge of the Sith). So while this could be another possibility, I don't see it as being quite as likely.

In the end, it's not really specifically about Luke, although it's his story that brings in the return, or the Jedi Order, or Anakin specifically...but as the return of a different time, the return of peace (something the Jedi fight for!) and the end (sadly) of a saga...it's a title that gives us an idea of what happens after the movie is finished as well. We know that the empire has been destroyed, and that eventually the Jedi will return to full force and the galaxy will once again be at peace (yeah right...like that happened!).

That's my opinion on that, and I'm sure this post has gotten insanely long, but I do that sometimes. LOL. =)

    1. Yep, your post was insanely long, but that's all right :) I like seeing other peoples' input on ideas such as these. Thanks for your opinion!

I thought that it was about Anakin Skywalker, about his rise and fall. It starts in TPM with him as a desert child, then pretty much ends in ROTJ with him dying with the Light blazing in him once more.

Did you know Lucas' original nine-part saga had Ben Skywalker and Anakin Solo the same age, Anakin the only child of the Solos and the Sith Lords return? I read the intended scripts somewhere on the Internet (the original scripts before they were scrapped) and I was just like o.O

      Endless.

  2. I;ve always wondered about this, too. Whether it means anakin returning to the Light Side or the Jedi Order being resurrected through Luke, I havent figure it out. Perhaps someone can ask George Lucas...
BTW, you should check out my blog. I just found your's.
